Is Israel Digging Her Own Grave?
There are so many things Israel could change to improve its image while remaining fully secure
No, I do not want to think it, let alone say it. But more and more, I think Israelis are committing national suicide. Of course, I am far away and see things from a distance, and if you are in the eye of the storm, things might look different. But distance sometimes gives clarity that those living inside constant pressure cannot always see.
Let me be blunt and honest. Israel has every right to exist. Israel has every right to defend itself. Israel has every right to stop terrorism, to protect its citizens, and to survive in a region where too many still dream openly of wiping it off the map. Those are facts. But having rights does not mean every decision is smart. Strength without wisdom becomes self sabotage.
Let us start with the Gaza flotilla.
We all know many of these activists are not truly caring for the so called Palestinians. Many of them want headlines, chaos, provocation, and images they can use to demonize Israel. They bait Israel because they know Israel often reacts exactly how they hope.
So Israel stops them near Crete and suddenly the world is screaming again about brutality, genocide, apartheid, cruelty. Why on earth did Israeli security agencies and the government think this was the best option?
There was another choice. A smarter choice.
Send an official statement through Greek law enforcement. State clearly that there is a lawful naval blockade. Give the coordinates. Inform them that if they proceed, the vessel will be inspected for weapons and prohibited materials. Inform them that if they enter Israeli waters unlawfully, consequences will follow. Inform them they are free to continue at their own risk toward Gaza, but they should expect no Israeli assistance and no right to enter Israel afterward.
Very clear. Very simple. Very legal. Very hard to twist.
Instead, Israel too often wins tactically and loses strategically. It stops one boat and creates ten thousand hostile headlines. It intercepts one provocation and fuels one million angry posts online. This is not strength. This is poor judgment.
And this problem goes far beyond one flotilla.
There are so many things Israel could change to improve its image while remaining fully secure. Recognize people who advocate for you. Answer letters. Keep promises. Show loyalty to your friends. Act like you actually care.
But to be blunt, too often people trying to help Israel are ignored. Diaspora Jews, Christian allies, non Jews defending Israel in hostile spaces, people spending time and reputation to fight anti Israel lies. Many feel invisible. They write, they support, they donate, they speak up, and get silence in return.
Always an excuse. Busy. War. Shabbat. Pesach. Elections. War again.
Sometimes fair reasons exist. But endless excuses become a culture. Nations that survive know how to value allies. Nations under siege especially should understand this.
Another issue is administrative detention.
While Israel advocates are trying to assure the world that Israel is a lawful democracy, prisoners are held for long periods without normal trial processes. Even when security reasons exist, this is poison for Israel’s credibility. Every case becomes propaganda gold for enemies.
Why not flood the system with legal manpower? Israel has lawyers. Appoint hundreds if needed. Set limits. Severe cases before a judge quickly. Minor cases resolved quickly. Transparent review mechanisms. Independent oversight. Emergency powers should feel exceptional, not routine.
Because when exceptional measures become normal, democracies start looking like something else.
Even people who deeply love Israel and defend Israel begin to worry when they see this. They fear Israel slowly becoming the very kind of state it was meant never to be.
Now let me be equally blunt with ordinary citizens.
If you have the privilege to live in that special and beautiful country, understand something painful but true. Israel is judged by different standards. Fair or unfair, that is reality. Every civilian crime, every racist outburst, every act of vandalism, every vigilante video, every attack on innocents, every drunken nationalist stunt will be seen worldwide.
Do not do it.
If someone burns a mosque, the world sees Israel. If Israelis living in judea&Samaria attack olive trees, the world sees Israel. If mobs chant hatred, the world sees Israel. If soldiers are filmed humiliating civilians unnecessarily, the world sees Israel. If corruption thrives, the world sees Israel.
You may think one stupid act is personal. It is not. It becomes national damage.
If someone truly hates the country enough to disgrace it and endanger it, then the state should punish firmly under law. There is no room for chaos when the stakes are existential.
Israel is not Luxembourg. It is not a sleepy nation that can survive endless stupidity. Israel lives under pressure. It carries the safety of millions of Jews. It carries history. It carries trauma. It carries responsibility.
That means discipline matters. Intelligence matters. Optics matter. Law matters. Gratitude matters. Strategy matters.
Israel’s enemies want it isolated, hated, reckless, angry, and self destructive. The greatest victory they could ever achieve would be for Israel to become its own worst enemy.
Think twice before doing stupid things.
Think three times before making avoidable mistakes.
Do not dig your own grave.

What we learned, too late, is that Israel’s enemies do not care who you vote for. Peace activists from the southern kibbutzim were murdered next to right wing supporters, Arabs, and foreign workers. Hamas killed without distinction. Ideology did not protect anyone.
