Hessy Taft (born Hessy Levinsons in 1934) is a Holocaust survivor best known for an extraordinary and ironic episode from her infancy involving Nazi propaganda.

She was a Jewish child born in Berlin to Latvian-Jewish parents.

As a baby, her photograph was secretly submitted by a Jewish photographer to a Nazi contest seeking the “perfect Aryan baby.”

Hessy won the contest, and her image was widely published in Nazi propaganda materials as the ideal Aryan child—without the Nazis knowing she was Jewish.

Her family later fled Nazi Germany, eventually settling in the United States, where she survived the Holocaust.

As an adult, she became Hessy Levinsons Taft, earned a PhD, and worked as a professor of chemistry.

Her story is often cited as a powerful exposure of the absurdity and pseudoscience of Nazi racial ideology.

Hessy Taft’s life stands as a striking reminder that Nazi racial theories were not only evil—but fundamentally false.

May her memory be a blessing
