Founded in 1948, El Al has grown from a newly established national carrier into one of the world’s most recognizable airlines. Created shortly after the founding of the State of Israel, El Al was established to connect the young nation with the rest of the world and quickly became a symbol of Israeli resilience, innovation, and global connection.

The airline’s first official flight took place in September 1948, when it transported Israel’s first president, Chaim Weizmann, from Geneva back to Israel. In the decades that followed, El Al expanded its international routes while building a reputation for safety, reliability, and advanced aviation security measures. The airline became especially known for operating under challenging political and regional conditions while maintaining uninterrupted global operations.

Throughout its history, El Al has played a significant humanitarian and historical role beyond commercial aviation. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, the airline participated in Operation Magic Carpet, helping transport tens of thousands of Yemeni Jews to Israel. Decades later, in 1991, El Al took part in Operation Solomon, a dramatic airlift that evacuated Ethiopian Jews to Israel within a matter of hours. These missions became defining moments in both Israeli history and the airline’s legacy.

Over the years, El Al modernized its fleet and expanded its services to major destinations across Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. The airline introduced advanced aircraft technology, upgraded passenger experiences, and developed premium business and loyalty programs while remaining strongly associated with Israeli identity and culture.

Security has remained one of El Al’s defining characteristics. The airline is internationally recognized for its strict and highly sophisticated security procedures, many of which became industry benchmarks. This focus on passenger safety has contributed significantly to El Al’s global reputation.

Like many airlines, El Al faced major challenges during global crises, including economic downturns, regional conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the airline continued adapting through restructuring efforts, fleet modernization, and expanded partnerships with international carriers.

Today, El Al continues to serve as Israel’s flagship airline, carrying millions of passengers each year while connecting Israel to destinations around the globe. More than just an airline, El Al remains closely tied to the story of modern Israel — representing connection, perseverance, and national identity for over seven decades.
