Islam, Peace, and the Tragedy of Hamas
Islam is often described as a religion of peace. The word itself comes from the Arabic root s-l-m, meaning peace and submission. Millions of Muslims worldwide live by values of compassion, justice, and coexistence. Yet, groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, and ISIS distort Islam into a weapon of terror. They desecrate the very faith they claim to uphold.

Millions of Muslims worldwide live by values of compassion, justice, and coexistence. Yet, groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, and ISIS distort Islam into a weapon of terror. They desecrate the very faith they claim to uphold.
The question is: how can a religion that emphasizes mercy and the sanctity of life be twisted into justifying the murder of innocents?
Islam and Its Core Teachings
At its core, Islam stresses values recognizable to Jews and Christians alike: giving charity (zakat), showing mercy, protecting the vulnerable, and striving for justice. The Qur’an explicitly states: “Whoever kills a soul… it is as if he had slain mankind entirely” (Qur’an 5:32).
The Prophet Muhammad himself offered an example of restraint and forgiveness. When he conquered Mecca, instead of revenge, he declared amnesty for his enemies. Historically, Jews and Christians in Muslim lands were granted dhimmi status, meaning protected religious minorities.
This makes it all the more tragic that Hamas and other extremists trample these values and cloak their crimes in religion.
How Hamas Distorts Islam
Founded in 1987, Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. Its charter does not speak of coexistence or compromise but openly demands the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jews.
How do they justify this? By cherry-picking and distorting scripture. Verses about warfare that mainstream scholars contextualize as responses to historic conflicts are twisted into eternal commands. The Qur’an’s clear prohibitions against killing innocents are ignored.
This is not Islam. This is politics dressed in theology. On October 7th, 2023, when Hamas murdered, raped, and kidnapped Israeli civilians, they did not act as Muslims. They acted as terrorists, betraying the very faith they claimed to honor.
Historical Parallels: When Faith is Abused
Hamas is not the first to exploit religion for power and bloodshed. Christianity itself has been abused in similar ways:
- The Crusades: Medieval rulers launched “holy wars” in the name of Christ, slaughtering Jews and Muslims. But Jesus’ teachings of love and forgiveness were the polar opposite of what was done in his name.
- The Inquisition: Religious authorities tortured and executed supposed “heretics” in Spain, justifying cruelty as divine duty.
- Modern Extremism: White supremacist groups in the West sometimes cloak their hatred in “Christian” language.
In each case, religion was manipulated for politics, power, or ideology. The abuse of Christianity by Crusaders does not mean Christianity itself is violent. In the same way, Hamas’ abuse of Islam does not mean Islam is violent.
The lesson is clear: extremists of all kinds hijack faith to sanctify their crimes. Hamas belongs to this long, shameful tradition.
Why Some Christians Support Hamas
It may seem shocking that Christians, who follow a faith rooted in love, mercy, and the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” , would side with Hamas. Yet some do, for reasons that are political rather than religious:
- Liberation Theology Misapplied: Some Christian activists miscast Palestinians as an oppressed people fighting “colonial Israel.” Through this lens, Hamas appears as freedom fighters, not terrorists.
- Ignorance of Hamas’ Reality: Many well-meaning Christians don’t know Hamas’ charter or its atrocities. They repeat slogans like “Free Palestine,” not realizing Hamas’ version of “freedom” means wiping Israel off the map.
- Antisemitism in Disguise: Sadly, ancient Christian antisemitism sometimes resurfaces under the modern cloak of “anti-Zionism.”
But supporting Hamas is not supporting peace. It betrays both Christianity and Islam, as it fuels more bloodshed and keeps Palestinians under tyranny.
The Israeli Reality
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East where Jews, Muslims, and Christians live side by side, work together, and vote in free elections. Arab Israelis serve in parliament, run hospitals, and sit as judges. In contrast, Hamas would never tolerate such pluralism.
Supporting Hamas does not liberate Palestinians, it chains them further. Hamas steals aid, censors dissent, and uses civilians as human shields. Every rocket launched into Israel is not “Islamic resistance”; it is another betrayal of Islam’s message of peace.
A Call for Clarity
Islam is not the enemy. Hamas is. Muslims are not the enemy. Radical Islamists are. Israel’s struggle is not with a religion but with terrorism. To equate the two is to let Hamas define Islam, and that is an insult to millions of peaceful Muslims worldwide.
Just as Christianity survived the Crusades and Inquisitions without being permanently stained, Islam must not be judged by the crimes of Hamas. The true clash is not between Islam and Judaism, or Muslims and Jews, but between life and death, peace and terror.
Christians, Jews, and Muslims of good will should unite to say:
- Terrorism is never holy.
- Killing innocents is never righteous.
- Peace cannot be built on lies.
The sooner the world recognizes Hamas for what it is; a death cult hiding behind religion, the sooner Palestinians can be free, and Israelis can live without fear.
That is the true vision of peace: the vision both Islam and Judaism, at their best, call us to embrace.
